Student Engagement

Sunshine SDS is a Positive Behavior Support School and in line with working proactively across our school we have identified specific areas of support for our school community.

Positive behavior support ensures all students and staff have the tools available to be successful learners. We work on the premise that all teachers are equipped with the resources they require to provide a safe and supportive environment for their students.

We promote a primary preventative model, which ensures expected behaviors are clear and transparent. We also acknowledge that some students require extra support to access their learning and provide secondary preventative strategies to ensure learning is successful. For some students our model provides tertiary prevention where external support may be accessed to provide a consistent approach to behavior across all environments.

Each team leader across the school is involved in positive behavior support to ensure continuity across all sections of the school.

The Wellbeing and Engagement Team consist of the Wellbeing Team Leader, Community Engagement Coordinator, the school chaplain, School Nurse and the Community Partnerships and Transitions Coordinator.

The Community Engagement Coordinator supports families with enrolments, transitions and funding applications.

The Community Partnerships and Transitions Coordinator builds partnerships within the community and connects and develops networks between the school and the broader community.

Our school nurse attends to all medical issues that arise throughout the school and works proactively to support the health of our school community.

Our school chaplain works closely with families to access services in the community. She is also available to visit families in their home or to link families into community services. Our chaplain works very proactively to provide relevant information to our parent community by organizing guest speakers to our monthly parent forum.

The wellbeing team leader monitors proactive behaviour strategies across the school, addresses the safety of both staff and students, conducts tours of the school and supports the enrolment process.

The aim of our school is to provide a rich positive school culture that is built on a safe and secure environment. Our focus is on early intervention and preventative strategies that promote the teaching of social skills, uphold our school values and promote a school culture that values individuality and diversity.

Sunshine SDS is a Child Safe School and takes into the diversity of all children, including the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with disabilities and vulnerable children.
